Converted Ships Add Subsea Cable Capacity by 2028
Three offshore supply vessels bought by LD Armateurs are announced for conversion into cable ships, with service planned for early 2028.

LD Armateurs has acquired three platform supply vessels under construction, which will be converted into submarine telecommunications cable installation and repair ships. The development is announced rather than shipped: the vessels are scheduled for delivery in the second quarter of 2027, with entry into service planned for the first quarter of 2028.
Why it matters
Demand for subsea cable capacity is pushing operators to add specialized installation fleets, and converting existing offshore vessels is one route to that capacity. LD Armateurs already manages cable-laying vessels for Alcatel Submarine Networks and Optic Marine Group, so the acquisition extends an existing operating role rather than opening a new one.
Each converted vessel will carry 2,800 tonnes of cable and will have hybrid-electric propulsion, figures the company has announced for vessels not yet delivered. The 2,800-tonne capacity is a planned specification, and no performance results from the converted ships exist yet.
The players
LD Armateurs
French offshore shipowner that manages cable-laying vessels for Alcatel Submarine Networks and Optic Marine Group and is establishing the Académie LDA crew-training programme.
LD TravOcean
Cable installation subsidiary of LD Armateurs that took delivery of the DP2 multipurpose vessel TVO Mariner in September 2026.
The details
The three vessels are platform supply ships, offshore support vessels originally built to service oil and gas platforms, currently under construction. After delivery they will move to a conversion shipyard, where cable operations equipment will be installed so the hulls can lay and recover subsea telecommunications cable. Once converted, the ships will handle conventional installation, repair work and more complex projects, and their hybrid-electric propulsion combines batteries with conventional engines to reduce fuel use during operations.
Timeline
September 2026: LD TravOcean received delivery of the DP2 multipurpose vessel TVO Mariner.
November 5, 2026: LD Armateurs announced the acquisition of the three platform supply vessels.
Q2 2027: Scheduled delivery of the three vessels for conversion.
Q1 2028: Planned entry into service of the converted cable ships.
The Tech Race
LD Armateurs follows its earlier Gdansk conversion of the PSV Ile de Molene into a cable maintenance ship, applying the same hull-conversion approach to three vessels. The move is a scaling of an established model rather than a new technical direction in the subsea cable market.
The converted vessels are not scheduled to enter service until the first quarter of 2028, so the capacity will not affect users before then. Operators and cable customers will see the added installation and repair capacity only once the ships are delivered and converted.
The takeaway
Watch whether the three vessels meet their second-quarter 2027 delivery date and their first-quarter 2028 entry into service. Those dates will show whether converting existing offshore hulls can add cable installation capacity on the announced schedule.
