A Vulkan graphics driver called MaliSX2, built for devices with Arm Mali GPUs, is coming to the Dolphin and HakuX emulators. Only development builds of Dolphin include MaliSX2 support, and it is not available in official HakuX versions, so the development is currently in development-build and early-integration stage rather than a finished, broadly available release.
Why it matters
Emulator performance on Arm handhelds and phones has depended heavily on the system graphics driver, and MaliSX2 targets that gap for a broad range of Mali-equipped devices. Snapdragon processors remain the preferred choice for demanding emulators because of custom Turnip GPU drivers, which makes a Mali-focused driver a notable step for the Arm GPU ecosystem.
The author's test covered only three games on the ANBERNIC RG477V and found no significant performance boost in any of them. The ARMSX2 team's claim that Ace Combat 4 and 5 ran at full speed remains unverified in the source, and no benchmark figures are reported.
The players
Dolphin
An open-source GameCube and Wii emulator project that is among the most widely used emulators on desktop and mobile platforms.
HakuX
A PlayStation 2 emulator that is the subject of the MaliSX2 integration alongside Dolphin.
ARMSX2
The developer team behind the MaliSX2 Vulkan driver, which claimed Ace Combat 4 and 5 ran at full speed with the new driver.
The details
MaliSX2 is a Vulkan driver, meaning it uses Vulkan, a low-level graphics interface that lets software talk more directly to the GPU, the graphics processor that renders images. It is designed for devices with Arm Mali GPUs, including MediaTek-powered devices, older Pixel and Samsung phones, current flagship Galaxy tablets, and handhelds. Users enable it in Dolphin through the settings icon, then Graphics Settings, then GPU Driver, where it replaces the system driver.
Timeline
MaliSX2 debuted as a Vulkan driver for Mali GPUs last month, relative to November 2026.
The article announcing MaliSX2's coming to Dolphin and HakuX was published on November 5, 2026.
The Tech Race
Snapdragon processors have held the lead for demanding emulators because of the custom Turnip GPU drivers that accompany them. MaliSX2 is an attempt to bring comparable driver-level optimization to Mali-equipped Arm devices, though the source's own test found no significant gain yet.
The driver is currently enabled only in development builds of Dolphin, and it is not available in official HakuX versions. Owners of Mali-equipped phones, tablets and handhelds should not expect a noticeable performance change yet, based on the author's test.
The takeaway
Watch for whether the ARMSX2 team's Ace Combat 4 and 5 claims hold up in independent testing across more Mali devices. The MaliSX2 project's GitHub page is the place to track when the driver moves from development builds into official Dolphin and HakuX releases.
