Is now a good time to transition data center infrastructure to fully optical scale-up networks?
Photonics startup Mixx has developed the SxC fiber connector to address the connection density limits of modern data center scale-up networks. The company, founded in 2023, is currently focused on high-density connectivity solutions as research-stage technology for future rack-scale architectures.
Why it matters
Copper interconnects experience significant signal degradation at high data rates over short distances, creating a bottleneck for massive GPU clusters. Increasing fiber density enables the large-scale optical networking required for next-generation AI infrastructure.
The SxC connector packs 64 fibers into a single unit, achieving a density of 1,000 fibers within 800mm2. This design is intended to surpass current copper limitations, where signal degradation becomes prohibitive beyond 1.25 meters at high speeds.
The players
Mixx
A U.S.-based photonics startup developing high-density fiber interconnects and optical engines for data center infrastructure.
Nvidia
A designer of graphics processing units and data center systems, including the Vera Rubin NVL576 platform.
The details
Mixx utilizes high-density fiber attaches to create optical interposers for rack backplanes—the base circuit boards that allow data transfer between hardware components in a server rack. By shifting from traditional copper to near-packaged optics, the system places light-based signaling components closer to the processors. This architecture is intended to facilitate the massive throughput required for systems like Nvidia’s Vera Rubin NVL576, which connects 1,152 GPUs in a single unit.
Timeline
2023: Mixx was founded by Vivek Raghuraman and Rebecca Schaevitz.
2028-2029: Mixx plans to market its first near-packaged optic engine.
End of the decade: Mixx expects to launch its first co-packaged optics product.
The Tech Race
The development of high-density interconnects follows the push to support massive GPU clusters like the Vera Rubin NVL576, which connects 1,152 chips. As data rates exceed the 1.25-meter range limit of copper, the industry is transitioning toward near-packaged and co-packaged optical engines.
These interconnect technologies are currently in development and will not reach the market until 2028 or later. They primarily target cloud infrastructure providers and data center operators managing high-bandwidth AI hardware clusters.
The takeaway
As GPU clusters grow in size, fiber density will become a critical performance variable for data center architecture. Watch for the company's progress on near-packaged optic engine commercialization scheduled for 2028-2029.
