Salesforce Launches Lightning Platform Mobile Tool

Live Poll

Would you consider using low-code tools to build mobile apps for your own business tasks?

Salesforce has released Lightning Platform Mobile, a development system designed to let line-of-business experts and administrative staff build mobile applications without traditional developer skills. The platform includes three core components for building, connecting, and publishing apps, including an automated submission tool for the Apple App Store and Google Play.

Why it matters

The platform addresses a critical enterprise shortage where two-thirds of companies have fewer than 15 mobile developers. By streamlining app creation for non-technical staff, it seeks to lower the barrier for organizations struggling to fund traditional mobile development cycles.

The system includes the Mobile Builders tool featuring prebuilt JavaScript components and access to more than 180 additional modules via the Salesforce AppExchange. This adds to the existing Lightning Web Components library, which was released by the company several weeks prior.

The players

Salesforce

An enterprise software company known for its CRM platform and cloud-based business tools.

Apple

A consumer electronics and software company that manages the iOS app ecosystem and partner developer programs.

MuleSoft

An enterprise integration platform acquired by Salesforce to facilitate data connectivity between disparate applications.

The details

Lightning Platform Mobile allows users to assemble prebuilt JavaScript components into custom mobile interfaces using Mobile Builders. Once an app is ready, Mobile Publisher automates the complex packaging and submission process required by the Apple App Store and Google Play. Integration of enterprise back-end services, third-party data, and the Einstein AI service is handled through the Mobile Services module.

Timeline

  1. March 2018: Salesforce acquired MuleSoft.

  2. September 2018: Salesforce partnered with Apple at Dreamforce.

  3. October 2026: Salesforce released Lightning Platform Mobile.

  4. October 2026: Salesforce updated the iOS SDK.

The Tech Race

This release follows the debut of Lightning Web Components several weeks ago, positioning Salesforce to capture the low-code mobile market. It builds on the strategy established by the 2018 Apple partnership to simplify how enterprise data is delivered to mobile devices.

Administrative staff and line-of-business experts can now build and deploy mobile apps without waiting for a dedicated software engineering team. The tool is available immediately, though organizations will likely rely on existing Lightning Web Components to populate the mobile interface.

The takeaway

Salesforce is betting that moving development into the hands of line-of-business staff can solve the chronic enterprise mobile talent gap. Watch for the adoption rate of mobile assets created by non-developers compared to traditional developer-led projects over the next fiscal year.
