STMicroelectronics has begun production of a new series of small, low-loss intelligent molded modules (IPMs). The initial STGI15C60S model features a 20-amp rating and a 30 percent reduction in physical footprint compared to existing packages.

Why it matters

These modules are designed to improve energy efficiency in motor-drive systems by integrating power components into a smaller, thermally efficient package. This development offers manufacturers a more compact hardware solution for high-voltage power conversion.

The modules measure 18.8 by 32.8 millimeters and provide 2,000 volts RMS isolation. The STGI15C60S supports a 600-volt three-phase inverter bridge with switching frequencies up to 20 kilohertz.

The players

STMicroelectronics

A global semiconductor manufacturer specializing in power electronics, sensor technology, and embedded processing.

The details

The module utilizes topside cooling, a thermal management technique where heat is removed from the top surface of the device rather than the base. It integrates trench-gate and short-circuit rugged technology to handle high-voltage operations within its compact CDIPB-26L DBC package. Each unit combines two control integrated circuits, a bootstrap diode, and necessary protection circuitry into a single chassis.

The Tech Race

This release marks a 30 percent reduction in area compared to existing IGBT IPM packages, extending the trend toward higher power density in motor control systems. It directly competes in the crowded market for industrial power-conversion modules where space-saving designs are currently prioritized.

The STGI15C60S is currently in production and available for purchase, with pricing starting at $4.35 per unit for 1,000-piece orders. The modules are intended for use by engineers designing industrial motor-drive systems that require higher efficiency and smaller footprints.

The takeaway

These modules offer a practical reduction in size for power conversion hardware. Interested developers should watch for future efficiency performance benchmarks in high-frequency motor-drive environments.
